Cupid woke to the oddest sensation. A feeling that something was missing. Rolling over, the twinge in his backside reminded him of the night before.
“Oh crap.”
He turning to the side, he stretched out his arm to feel the cool sheet under his palm. Disappointment welled in him as he realized Thyme must have left quite a while ago.
“Of course he did. You didn’t actually expect him to stick around and snuggle, did you?” he muttered.
Pain sliced through him, cold and unrelenting. Why did he have to care so much for a man who would only ever see him as a play thing? Clearly that’s all he was, otherwise Thyme would be here right now. Cupid had been so sure the older man had wanted to talk, to confess something to him...he had obviously been wrong. Thyme making him promise to hear him out in the morning was probably the bastard’s way of having an easy escape if Cupid woke before him in the morning.
He felt like such a fool.
Climbing from the bed, needing to get away from the scent of him and Thyme together, Cupid headed straight for the bathroom. Turning the taps on and stepping under the spray, he began scrubbing away any physical traces of the previous night. Pity he couldn’t wipe it away completely. His skin burned from the harsh strokes but Cupid continued almost like it was a compulsion. If he stopped, he’d still feel Thyme on him, around him. And then he might actually break.
No. He was stronger than this. He wasn’t some simpering little boy, he was fucking Cupid!
Ceasing his punishing movements, Cupid briskly washed away the suds. Stepping out of the shower and drying himself quickly, he wasted no time in dressing. He would track Thyme down and demand some answers. If he really did just use Cupid for a night of fun, then dammit, the man needed to say it to his face. Hell, maybe it was exactly what he would need to get over this stupid infatuation he had carried around for far too long. He knew he’d never be the same if Thyme really wanted nothing else from him, but it was a price he was willing to pay to know the truth.
With that thought in mind, Cupid quickly dressed and moved in front of the mirror, stealing himself. Concentrating with one thought in mind, he reached out to the one person who perhaps knew him best, and would no doubt see through his pretense. He waited a moment until the largest man on the planet stared back at him. With silver hair, thick beard and sparkling blue eyes, the man who had practically raised him, greeted him with an enormous smile.
“Cupid? What can I do for you, son?”
“I need your help, Nick.”
Thyme knew something was wrong the moment he and Nate materialized into the home of Jack
Frost. One glance at the bloodied tiles had his stomach sinking. They had followed the trail left by the hourglass, faint as it was.
